I recently wrote you with some info on The Liberty Church near Bethel Springs. I thought I would share a couple more stories with you.
Many years ago myself and 3 of my buddies decided to go coon hunting one night. This night was not any different than the many others we had enjoyed as Teenagers growing up in rural Tennessee. We turned the dogs loose near the Chester and McNairy County line just after dark and the hunt was on. Things started out slow as we left the hills and started off into the bottom. The dogs soon treed and as usual we shined for the coon to confirm what the dogs had said was up the tree and let him be. This was summer time and we could only train the dogs and not kill the coon. As we lead the dogs away they soon struck another scent and off they went out of hearing range. We headed deeper into the bottom in direction we had last heard them and soon found ourselves in a swamp with water knee deep. After 20-30 mins. of wading and not hearing the dogs we stumbled upon a small little island in the middle of this watery world. Tired, lost, and hot we decided to sit down on an old log to rest and listen for the dogs. As we cut our lights off to sit in the twilight we were
awe struck as to what we beheld. The entire ground and the log we were sitting on was glowing this erie green glow.
You could pick up a piece of wood on the ground and it would glow in your hand. I had seen this phenomenon once before when I was a small child. It was Fox-Fire. When conditions are just right, moisture, temperature, etc. decaying wood fungus will display this treat for just a short time. In the middle of that swamp on this tiny island of land we had hit upon the most incredible display of Fox-Fire I have ever seen.
If you want to see something incredibly erie then this summer put on some waders and head out on a rainy humid night to your nearest swamp and just maybe you also can experience this unique adventure.
