It’s still way too cold to venture out to explore new places, but I have updates!
I spoke to an employee of WMHI yesterday and there are numerous reports of incidents occurring in Luton Hall. One woman reported her hair being pushed behind her shoulder while several others have reported a presence in one of the restrooms.
I also learned that years ago there was a woman (I think I was told it was a woman) who could levitate above several feet above the bed. Apparently, many staff members walked into her room and discovered her doing just that. Many of the employees believe she is still lurking on the top floor and occasionally makes her presence known.
If anyone knows anything about these happenings, please leave a comment. Also, while it’s too cold to go out and take photographs for my readers I would like to invite you to stop by my other blog, http://www.allaboutbipolar.com.
i worked at western in 2002. When i was there, that lady was still there. All of the information on the levitation is documented by physicians in her chart. I witnessed several strange things with her, including her being able to put a cigarette out on her skin and without burning herself. I worked in Luton Hall a very short time as well, and most people didn’t like the night shift there although I never had anything happen to me.
I know several people who work there now and they all say the third floor is kind of creepy. One of the women said she was in the bathroom when something pushed her hair off her shoulder. Several people say they think that woman is still there. It’s interesting to hear from someone who interacted with her.
My grandfather Presley Garrett lived out about his last ten years of life at western state.
He was mentally ill most of his adult life and the sheriff in Lauderdale county told my momma that he could no longer keep granddaddy locked up in the county jail (as was common back then with the mentally ill) and so the story goes momma telephoned Senator Howard Baker in Nashville.
He returned her call by days end and said don’t you worry well get your daddy in there. And he did!
Probably didn’t hurt at the time that she had the same last name as Senator (Baker.) We always wondered if that influienced the decision process.
I remember visiting granddaddy there in the heat of the summer sitting with him out in the court yard listening to the cicada singing high up in the trees. And catching them in old fruit jars.
I remember those flying squirrels on the property too.
Wonder what happened to them?
Also would like to know why those tunnels are beneath the hospital and what they were used for?
Also are they still used today for any reason? maybe for storm shelter?
It quite possibly made the admissions process quicker, but Western has taken in many over the years and only recently started moving them out because of budgeting issues. I would say it sped up the admission process.
My grandmother worked at Nat T (Winston) for many years and we would stop by there from time to time. I loved watching the squirrels. They say they are still there but I have not been there in quite a long time. The property was always beautiful, with very old trees and lots of wildlife. When patients could roam the grounds, it was like a small sanctuary for them.
The tunnels are no longer in use but they occasionally access them. Most people who have been in them don’t like the tunnels and get a weird feeling. I *think* the tunnels connect some of the buildings and there are many rumors as to what went on in the tunnels but I can’t really say what they were used for.
Lauderdale County, huh? I have inlaws in Lauderdale County.
I worked at western for five years and my first position was in Luton Hall third floor. The place is haunted you can hear doors slamming and the patients would be sleep!! There were actually two women that floated over there bed!!!! As well as some men!!! In a way I’m glad that I am not there any more!!!
Several of the current employees don’t like Luton 3. If I remember what I was told correctly, they are now removing patients from the third floor and discontinuing its use.
