Old Trinity Episcopal Church is located in Mason, TN. It was founded in 1847 in the place of Saint Andrew’s Church, which had burned two years earlier.
For many years, the church was not taken care of and the church and cemetery was vandalized by a small Satanic cult. They broke most of the gravestones, and vandalized the church building.
Behind the church there is a statue of the Virgin Mary which serves as a gravestone for a woman who died in 1912. It is said that this statue bleeds from the eyes and neck.
There are also stories that the church and the cemetery are haunted. People have reported seeing strange lights and hearing noises. Local legend says that the people buried in the cemetery are distressed over the vandalism of their graves.
I have only been to this cemetery once and it was during the daytime. Perhaps I will return some time, but be aware — I have heard that the caretaker has installed trip wires to keep people from trespassing.
hey this church is really scarry
I was out there today, and have been out there to shoot models twice now. The grounds are well maintained, and they are placing the shattered headstones on marble slabs, so they can still be read. A VERY interesting place, with a vet of the Civil War (CSA) and a Corporal from the Spanish American war interred there. The church itself is coming along well, and no trip wires or other ambush type paraphernalia were present.
I have never been to this church yet..I only live like 30 mins away from it..but were goin to see it tomm..which is July 21..Ill keep in touch an post if anything happens..I have a few friends that have went and crazy stuff happened..but stuff apparently only happens when ur being loud and distructive..Ima check it out for myself..just to take some pics..not to fool around by no means..I dont play around with stuff like that..no need to
My daughter and her friends went a few years back and they swear that the statue of the Virgin Mary was bleeding from her eyes. It scared them so badly that everyone scrambled away. My daughter said it was the scariest place she has ever been and that she will never go back.
Some years ago the church was only locked by the use a rope. The tale goes that if a person were to cut this rope to gain entry to the church then go in through the door and sit on a pew that death would come to them before their 25th birthday. No one had the nerve to test this tale.
There are dark reddish-brown stains streaming from under the statue’s eyes (looks exactly like dried blood), or at least there were the last time I looked. My friend lives close to it, so we’ve been out there a lot, trying to scare ourselves (which, by the way, worked wonderfully..haha).
You get the most activity when you go with a bigger group. One night, I went with a group of 6 people and 4 people went inside the church (I refused to go in..haha) and they SWORE they saw figures sitting in the pews. We decided to leave right after they came out, and we left the 2 front doors of the building open (the usual stick wasn’t wedged in the doors and they wouldn’t stay shut without it). When we were about halfway to the van, we looked back and the doors were still wide open. As we were about to climb in the van, we looked back, and they were still wide open. BUT once we all got in the van, cranked it and were about to leave, we looked back and the doors were shut.
Creepy fact… the graves at the foot of the Virgin statue are very old infant graves. That area is where a lot of people get the worst vibe…
I have only been to this church in the daytime and hope to go at night when the weather warms up. I would be very interested in seeing how some night shots turn out. I was hoping one of my readers would have some photos taken here but so far I have not received any.
Odd that you say that about the infant graves. Purdy Cemetery has a row of babies near the back and you can sometimes feel a presence there…as if someone is watching over them.
me and 7 other friends went last nite and sum really scary stuff opened. wen u pull up to the church u get this weird and eerie feelin and the church looks really creepy at night. but anyways we went last night about 3 in the morn(witchin hour) and a lot of creepy shit happen. yea the statue of mary does cry blood but i got the worst feelin inside the church we walked in thru the back but before we even made it inside the doors opened by themselves and we went in and heard a lot of eerie voices like somebody or something was prayin, wen we heard dey we ran and headed back toward the car but rite before we made it to the car we saw a black figure they may ben part of the satanic cult we ran like horses back to the car im gettin the creeps jus thinkin bout it but yea there is sumthin definetly goin on at old trinity!! i swear it
okay for real guys…me and my friend amy and jay went there last nite and no lie for real i seen green like orbs on the wall it was freaky i’m not kiddin i was scared shit less!!! i’m going again tomorrow nite!!
Me and a couple of friends went at one in the morning. It is blocked off so we had to park down the road. The tale goes that there is a block of wood that holds the door together, if you remove it you will die in a car accident by your twenty-first birthday. i have had a close family friend do this and on his 18th birthday he died in a car crash. The virgin mary has redish brown stains running down her eyes. It is very creeping. my friend took pictures and there are some freaky things that showed up. i didn’t go in the church! i am to chicken! maybe next time.
No, the legend is that there is a stick in the door and if it is broken before your 18th birthday then you will die by your 18th, if your already 18th then you will die by your 21st. A girl that went to my high school went and broke the stick her name was Heather Hiethcote (i don’t think I spelled that right) when she was 18 she died in a car reck. Too coicedental for me. I havn’t heard of anyone breaking it sence then-but once my husband and I were driving through and I got a chill- i didnt even know where I was. After I said I had an erie feeling my husband said we were driving past that church and said he felt the same. We sped through!
After reading this message board I decided to see if this place was anywhere near as scary as it sounded, and needless to say I wasn’t disappointed, my 4 companions and I decided to avoid talking on the way to the statue and back, hoping to check each others stories when we got back to the car. The place honestly just had a heavy feeling about it, that church and the area around it is cold and evil, nothing like the holy place of comfort it should be. After looking at the graveyard we decided to go back and as we passed the front of the church, it erupted with loud whispering and the entire group took off running. This is by no means a place that anyone needs to be looking for cheap thrills.
A group of 5 of us went to the church this evening. As most of us are huge fans of Paranormal investigation teams, we had a Digital Voice Recorder. Now I do not have software to check it for sure, but when we played the recording back we heard a voice not one minute into the recording while in the church. We saw the Virgin Mary statue and she was not crying this eveing. We removed the stick from the door and placed it back when we are done. Even if nothing paranormal actually happens, this is the perfect setting to have a little fun and spook yourself!!!

I’m going to go on Halloween night. Wish me luck!
I havent been to this church, but I wanna go today. I have a few friends that went n one of the guys said that its scared him so bad he almost cried.
I have been reading alot on this. My grandmother lives right around the corner. I think this is merely coincidence, but the story about the stick changes alot. Some say if you take the stick out and break it, you will die in 7 days, or you will die in a car wreck. A friend of a friend’s actually died one week before his 20th birthday, and it was exactly 7 days after he broke the stick. He lived right down the street and the car wreck he died in was on that same street just a few miles from the church. His friends felt bad for a while because they talked him into it. But he was a dare devil all the time. I have driven by it several times, but im scared to stop. It looks soo nice during the day around fall time. But like others have said please be respectful.
actually… im wrong… he was about to turn 18…
It’s a really pretty setting. I did not feel the least bit uneasy being there at dusk. It’s really peaceful.
